Let me know which ones you think are winners! and wish me luck- I don’t own my own camera yet, it would be more convenient if I did. Thanks =)

A weekend with the D100

It’s an older camera but it does the job, just because there’s a newer technology out there doesn’t mean the older stuff doesn’t still work– That’s something I’ve learned recently. I think you can tell from the photographs.

Three States- A weekend of casual photography

Well it certainly has been awhile! I’m sorry to those of you who frequent this page in the hope of new content. The semester has just begun and things are a little hectic , the good news is that I’ll be continuing to drive to New Hampshire every weekend and that always means more photos!

Please Enjoy =)090904_NH_weekend_4002

Not sure what it but these little guys just seem to pose for me

The Holy Ghost Church is near a friends house in Rhode Island, I was on my way to New Hampshire when I decided it was time to finally get a shot of this beautiful building.

It had been a few hours since the previous shot and I was in Worcester, Massachusetts and was passing the city when I saw this shot. I pulled over on the highway and had some fun.

090904_NH_weekend_4175

This shot was about a half-hour after Worcester. I was on RT 140 heading North, I pulled off the road before an exit and took this.

090906_NH_weekend_4257

The next day I was in New Hampshire and I had just finished working, I had been painting a women’s house. I’ve always wanted to get a decent photo of Mount Manadnock, which I’m told means the Mountain that stands alone in Native American. At one point it was the most climbed mountain in the world, I believe it’s still in the top 3-5.

090906_NH_weekend_4307

After taking some pictures of Mt. Monadnock I decided to walk the Wheeler Trail which is a trail that’s kept up by the towns conservation commission. It’s very short but it’s a great place to go for a picnic, although I went more during horror movie time, kinda looks scary.

090906_NH_weekend_4315

Dramatic affect that I did by zooming out very quickly as I took the shot, while pulling my arms back at the same time. ACTION!

090906_NH_weekend_4337

This is the same affect but done shooting upwards into the canopy of the trees.

090906_NH_weekend_4345090906_NH_weekend_4395

I returned to Monadnock for the sunset and it was very dramatic, I think I’m going to have some fun with it this Fall!

Please let me know what you think! You don’t even have to be a member of this site or use a real name! I really do appreciate honest feedback, good or bad, because it helps me to grow as an artist and potential professional! Thanks for visiting my blog =) I hope you enjoyed and and will come back, tell your friends!

Royal Mills, a photoshoot and a birthday surprise…

While driving my aunt on some errands last week we passed by some old and interesting mill buildings. The buildings resembled something European with a clock tower that looked more like a castle. I was told that they had been converted into apartments and that people now lived there. I made a note to come back soon. The weather yesterday couldn’t have been better and I had made a commitment to drive the 30 minute commute for the pictures. I received a phone call from my mom saying it was my aunt’s birthday so I decided it would be nice if I bought her a card and dropped it off on the way.

She was surprised and delighted to see me and so I invited her to come with me. She did and we had a wonderful time taking pictures.

DSC_0609

The trees and their reflections in the water interested me. There is a lot going on in this and it’s hard not to get lost in it. The lighting was perfect for this shot.

The image above is of the clock tower that I mentioned before. There is another view of it from the street side of the building but the American flag cast against the sky really drew me in.

090827_Royal_Mills_110

You can see why the building was so interesting to me initially simply because of its location on the river and the stone architecture. The building was renovated and repaired to accommodate apartments.090827_Royal_Mills_197

This was the reason I really went. I wanted to get a decent shot from the base of this smokestack looking up. Couldn’t have asked for better weather.

090827_Royal_Mills_331

My aunt pointed through the trees and exclaimed how pretty it looked, I agreed and I took the photo. I envy the people living in these apartments, right on the water.

DSC_0617

If you’ve seen my other posts you’ll know this is a familiar shot for me. I like shooting up the trunk of the tree because it creates wonderful depth of field, contrast and it leads your eye throughout the photo easily.

DSC_0652

This is a scenic path route. Walkers only. I didn’t have a chance to go the entire way but I think I’ll return in the fall for more shots and maybe an expedition of this trail. It looked quite long.

DSC_0619

DSC_0670

It would have been nice to have a wide angle lens so I could get the scope of this place. It’s quite large and this photo doesn’t quite capture it, but it gives you an idea. I spoke with some people on the bridge that is in the right foreground of the photo and they were telling us about what it was like to live there. They said they really liked it but that every now and then old nails pop up in the floor boards, through the varnish, and that it’s dangerous. suppose nothing is perfect but it looks pretty good to me anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to view my blog =) If you have the time please let me know what you think by commenting on this post. You don’t even have to be a member of this site! Thanks a ton and have a good one!

Looking for content…it found me first.

Looking for content…it found me first.

Be careful what you wish for.

I’ve been busy lately and haven’t been able to keep the content updated as  much as I’d like, I apologize to those of you who have been returning frequently for content that hasn’t been there. But I guess they say better late then never and this post really exemplifies that.

I had been looking for content and having missed the perfect opportunity earlier in the day due to an equipment problem I was really itching for something to photograph. I didn’t think it would find me first.

I was in New Hampshire again this past weekend for work as usual. During the evenings I like to spend time with my friends, we were all going to go to the movies to see Inglorious Bastards by Quitin Tarentino (It was great by the way). It had been lousy weather, it rained for about two hours; I found out the next day it had rained between 4-5 inches in that time. I was about a mile down the road from my house, on the way to pick up my friend Travis. I had gone through two large puddles that covered the road without incident, it was in the middle of third charming one that I realized my car wasn’t going to make it.

Halfway through the water was over a foot deep, I was very lucky the road wasn’t eroded below the surface! My car died and was stuck. The other cars behind me were far enough back to have learned from my mistake and they stopped. I looked left and what I saw was a waterfall, cascading over what had once been the embankment of the road. I realized I had to get help fast or I might lose my precious 1996 Subaru Legacy!

090822_NH_Flood_086

The emergency people arrived about 5 minutes after I had gotten out. As I am quoted in the Union Leader Newspaper “a man in a truck pulled me out with a rope.” This has caused some confusion as people are approaching my father and asking if I’m OK. The paper made it sound like “I” was pulled out, when rather it was my car, which was merely stuck. I was running from house to house asking people if they had any ropes or chain, but nobody did. A man who had seen me get stuck and had immediately stopped to help was the one who finally produced a small rope which he doubled up and I tied to the bottom of my car. I steered as he used his truck to pull my flooded wreck from the inundated highway.

090822_NH_Flood_066

You can see how deep it was from the picture above. Large trucks could make it through but I wouldn’t have suggested that they try, by this point the road could have been gone beneath the surface.

090822_NH_Flood_118 The emergency crews had to close many roads off for the evening because there was so much damage. On another main road that intersects with the one above There had been a landslide and half the road was inaccessible. I passed it that evening but the police wouldn’t let me stop to take pictures. I suppose I could have but it wouldn’t have been worth arguing with the officer.

THE NEXT DAY

090823_NH_Flood_175

The aftermath of this weekends rainstorms is still being resolved. State crews are still having to keep roads closed so they can work on them. You can see how extensive the damage was from the pictures below. I was driving home the next day and I parked my car and was able to take pictures for about 10 minutes before traffic began to move again.

DSC_9926 It was the worst flooding I’ve seen on this road and the most traffic, I beleive that people just wanted to get out and see the damage after reading about it in the paper.

090823_NH_Flood_199

As I parked my car a state vehicle tring to back up drove off the curb of the road and became stuck. It was rather funny seeing it all happen. I took some pictures for you to see it as well. They used a tractor to pull it out.

090823_NH_Flood_187

DSC_9918

After seeing the site where my car had almost been washed away I drove further up the road to see some of the other washout. They had one man on a tractor fixing about 50 yards of the road. I returned later though and there were more workers there. The damage was much more extensive then I had initially thought most of the embankments were completely gone and many driveways were completely ruined.

A theme? Not gonna find one here…

My weekend was one that yielded new and interesting experiences and new and exciting photographs! The flower below is called a starfighter I believe. The editing gives it an exciting plasma/neon look. The flower is naturally beautiful so it really didn’t need any help but I had fun doing it.

DSC_9514

I was driving through Peterborough center and I saw the man in the picture below working on the Unitarian church. My dad used to work for them and I lived there in an apartment they gave us. It was practically my home at one point. I used to stand at the exact spot I took this photo everyday when I waited for the schoolbus.

DSC_9533-2

Our little friend below was scampering along the fence to my dads property. I was walking by to go to my car and it just froze. So I decided that I would try to get as close as I could. If you look closely you can see me taking the photo in it’s eye.

The image of the sheep below is one of two that I’ve posted. The other is posted in my update of “B&W- the Beauty of Contrast”.  I was driving back into town when I passed a farm with sheep standing behind a fence near the road. I pulled my car into a driveway and took some pictures. I grew up working with farm animals so it was fun to get out of the car and smell the farm and pet the sheep.

DSC_9474

I have quite a few more pictures of the weekend but have to process them all. When I do, I have some wonderful pictures of the annual Jaffrey fireworks, and the night., that I’m sure everyone can enjoy! Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and for enjoying photograpy with me =)

B&W-The Beauty of Contrast

–B&W and the Beauty of Contrast–

Stand tall, refuse to be small…

The title “the beauty of contrast” is a duel purposed one. With it I express my own belief that often contrast can be viewed as a positive thing especially in social interactions with our peers. I believe we need people around us who have opinions and expressions different from our own. It challenges us and allows us to question ourselves and our opinions.

Unlike black and white photography the world is full of color and different shades of beauty as well as  different definitions or degrees of right and wrong. Black and white photography is beautiful to me and allows me to see details of an image that are usually masked by the colorful distractions of the world around us.

090814_hawk_009-2

My view on the world is sometimes obscured by the colorful distractions that society puts before me. It is with photographs like these that I can remember not to take anything for granted and to be objective and fair. It reminds me that there are details that I may not see or acknowledge because of the colorful distractions, present and unavoidable.

090814_hawk_015

The next few pictures are additions to this post. I took these while in New Hampshire. I was on my way to work and I accidentally took the wrong road, as if I was on my way to a different place I work at. It was out of habit that I too the turn and my own stubbornness that put me nine miles from my destination.

I thought to myself, “I think this comes out on the main road up ahead to if I keep following it I’ll be right on track”. Of course I was wrong but I didn’t  realize it until I was in Hancock town center, nine miles from Peterborough. I wasn’t disappointed but rather amused at getting lost in my own hometown. On the way back I passed a farm and I had to stop because I really like animals, and they were standing by the fence. I took some pictures and then went to work.

DSC_9485

The shot of the tiger lilly below is one that I took in my dad’s yard while I was visiting. I really like it because the black spots are interesting and grab my attention.

Redtail, Fast-Food and a Sluggish Gettaway

I was walking across the college campus while on my way to take pictures of the President’s house. passed three men who were on other side of the street near a dorm. I didn’t think much of them though at my first walk passed. About five minutes later I was walking back, now on their side of the road and they were still there. I thought they were just contractors doing work for the summer because they were all talking and looking at something. As I passed them I thought I heard one of them mention me, because I was still holding the camera. One of them said “wait he can take a picture” while he pointed. I followed his finger which was pointed directly at a Red-Tailed Hawk with a Gray Squirrel.

090814_hawk_075

I reacted immediately while I was thinking “why is it still on the ground?” when they catch a prey they usually take it into the air and fly away to be safe. It didn’t make much sense.

The man was still talking as I brought the camera up to my eye and started snapping shots. I moved in a little closer, but not close enough to scare it. When I was satisfied that I had taken some decent photos from a little ways back I moved in a little close and it started to take off with the squirrel clutched in it’s talons.

090814_hawk_087

The hawk flew to a nearby tree where it perched. I wasn’t particularly worried that it would fly away but I wanted to get over to where it was to get a shot of the squirrel too. The squirrel must have been to heavy for it which made it slow.

090814_hawk_159

Anyway I was lucky it didn’t want to fly away. It just wanted to stare at me while I took it’s picture. It did eventually fly away with the squirrel but I was happy that I had taken some nice pictures.

Anyway let me know what you think. And thank you for visiting my blog! =) Have a good one! <3
